I never cease to be amazed at the lack of honesty and integrity of some people when it comes to politics. The fabricating of out-and-out lies for the purpose of stirring the emotions in their followers is mind boggling. I would like to share a letter with you partially to illustrate my point and also to set the record straight on where the Albuquerque TEA Party (ATP) stands.
The letter comes from Progressive Champions PAC. They attempt to incriminate the Albuquerque TEA Party in the upcoming school board election.
"APS elections are just 3 weeks away and our Tea Party is targeting four more seats - enough to give them a majority on the APS board - and the tactics they are using are right out of the national Tea Party playbook."
As our supporters know, we do not support any candidates during any election. The letter also references our forum on January 17th, which was moderated by the League of Women's Voters. We invited all candidates to participate. If some of the democrats chose not to participate, that was their choice.
A question I have is, what is the Tea Party Playbook? The ATP has never been given a "Playbook" and I, as president, have never seen one.
This next quote is even more interesting:
"They are running board members of the Albuquerque Tea Party, promising to roll back required anti-discrimination laws and using fake news to fire up the right-wing base they need to fire up."
The reference to running board members is that Brian Tierney, an ATP board member (not vice president as the letter says), decided on his own, as an Albuquerque citizen, to run for the school board. No one on the ATP board asked him to and we have not given him any support.
The letter also says, "Kayla Marshall's campaign is managed by an active Tea Party member." First, I do not know who this TEA Party member is and second, the ATP does not tell our supporters what they as individuals can and cannot do. Because someone is active in the ATP and at the same time is helping a candidate does not make that activity an official ATP activity.
Finally, I would urge the writers of the Progressive Champions PAC letter share with us this "Fake News" that is supposed to get the right-wing base fired up. The "Right Wing Base" does not get fired up over fake news because they think with their heads and check news sources.
I urge the Progressive Champions PAC to check their sources before they print accusations such as in this letter. Printing unsubstantiated information only serves to diminish their honesty and their integrity. And THAT is why the democratic party and the progressive movement is slipping away into oblivion.
A question - if a candidate's supporters use lies and emotional images to influence the electorate, is that a reflection on the honesty and integrity of the candidate? Unless the candidate openly denies any association with that group, I would have to think so. History supports that a person who uses these tactics to win an election continues with the practice once they are in office.
As we all know, putting incumbents back into office and expecting different results is a definition of insanity. If you like the way the school board is running APS, by all means, vote the incumbents back in. Otherwise, let us communicate our dissatisfaction with the current board's performance and the behavior of their supporters and put new faces on the board.
I urge everyone to get out and vote. Otherwise, the unscrupulous people in our society will get out and vote their own kind onto the APS Board.
