The United States Divided (Addenda)
The split between Americans is philosophical. Politics is a branch of philosophy; so, an individual’s philosophy can be identified by his answers to two political questions:
1. What is the proper role of government -- to protect and defend the individual’s freedom or to control his actions?
2. What is the relationship between the individual and government – is government the servant of the individual, i.e., the doctrine of individualism, or is government the master of the individual, i.e., the doctrine of collectivism?
The political point of view expressed in the following examples indicates the individual’s philosophy.
When a Rightist states “no one has the right to violate other people’s rights,” the Leftist answers, “we do.” When a Rightist declares freedom begins with the individual’s freedom to think and to express his point of view freely, the Leftists claims that such a view is antiquated because you can’t cry “fire” in a crowded theatre.
When a Leftist says he’s for income re-distribution and a Rightist asks “will you take other people’s money by force?” the Leftist says “Americans people have too much money.” When a Leftist advocates free education for everyone, and a Rightist points out that the money would have to come those of us who earned it, the Leftist replies, “you didn’t build that.”
A comparison of Right and Left organizations shows a significant difference in the nature of their purposes and the aim of their political activism. .
The Left’s list of “progressive” organizations (shown in this web sites’ archives) gives little to no description of their purpose other than the phrase “social justice.”
